A misunderstanding (& also maybe my feminist awakening!)
I remember the first time I heard the phrase “topless bar.” I was about nine and I was reading an article about Mike Tyson in the NY Post. They mentioned that he had gotten into some kind of an altercation (possibly a fracas!) the previous night at a topless bar. I assumed that this was a bar in which all the patrons went topless. Perhaps you had to check your shirt at the door. I distinctly remember thinking this was a worse deal for the women than the men.
